A St Ann policeman is now in custody after he was allegedly caught red-handed collecting marked cash from a motorist in a brazen corruption sting.

The officer, attached to the St Ann's Bay Traffic Department, was arrested following an operation by investigators after he reportedly solicited and collected $230,000 from a man involved in a vehicular crash last Friday.

Reports are that the cop initially demanded $250,000 from the motorist, but later agreed to $230,000, allegedly telling him the payment would allow him to retrieve his vehicle from the pound.

The matter was reported to the Inspectorate of Professional Standards Oversight Bureau, which launched an investigation.

In a coordinated move, marked bills were handed to the complainant and later passed on to the policeman.

Investigators then moved in and accosted the officer, and the cash was reportedly found in his pocket.

He was subsequently taken into custody as the probe continues.
